There was absolute silence in the TARDIS. An unnatural, deep echoing silence that, nine times out of ten, meant something was very, very wrong. The Doctor, upon entering the Control Room from a rather nice and quiet street in 1954, noted this instinctively and prepared to Investigate.
“Luke?” she called out. “Dennis? Bart?”
Before she could panic properly, she felt a light breeze hailing the arrival of the TARDIS’s resident speedster, Bartholomew Allen. “Hey, Doc,” he said, casually. “When’d you get in?”
“What do you mean, ‘when did I get in’?” She demanded. “This is my TARDIS, or hadn’t you noticed?”
It was uncanny, how well he could roll his eyes. Very teenagerlike; did him credit. “Kind of a hard thing to forget.”
“Yes, well,” she said, only put off slightly. “Where’s Luke and Dennis?”
Bart shrugged. “Playing some kind of four-dimensional strategy game in the lounge, I think. My brain kinda glazed over during the fourth level.”
“I see,” the Doctor murmured. “Well, I suppose I’ll go see how they’re doing. Sarah Jane wouldn’t be terribly happy if they accidentally hit the bit on the hundred and eleventh level that sends them to the Eterna-“
It was bloody uncanny, the way Dennis and Luke showed up in the door like that just as she was about to walk through. And suspicious.
“Hi, Doctor! If you were just about to go look for us, there’s no need, because we’re right here!” Dennis said.
Luke nodded firmly. “Hello, Doctor.”
“That’s- convenient,” she muttered. “Luke, did anything... funny happen while I was gone?”
He frowned at her, utterly and completely puzzled. “No.”
“Hey,” Bart said, sticking his head out the TARDIS door. “Is it just me, or is that totally the dulcet tones of an ice cream truck I hear?”
…Well, she supposed it was nothing. At any rate, it probably wouldn’t bring the universe to an end if she left it for a little while. Probably. “Weeeeeeell,” she said, tapping her sonic screwdriver to her lips absently. “I suppose it’s all right. Anyone for ice cream?”
Of course, by the time they got back from the ice cream trip, the TARDIS was completely spick-and-span and showed absolutely no sign that, mere hours before, it had been covered entirely with slightly sentient cookie dough.
The magical brooms that cleaned on their own were, however, slightly more problematic.
