The Doctor hopped around the console excitedly, rambling at length about their next destination to her only passenger. “Have you got all that, K-9?”

“Affirmative. Target location: Hwicce.”

“You could have been just a little more enthusiastic.” She glanced at K-9 as she tapped her fingers lightly against the vector tracker, and shook her head. “Nevermind, forget I said that. D’you know, I met Sarah Jane when I accidentally brought her to Hwicce. During-“


[The universe slid. The Doctor clutched at the console, the walls, everything solid and familiar and connected, and held on for dear life. Some force was punching a hole through the universe, she could feel it, she had to-]


Her voice faltered. Her memory must be slipping. Sixteen hundred years, you can’t expect to remember everything. “-just after that business with Linx. Bea Nelson, her name was. Fantastic woman, Bea. Met Edgar Stanley when I was still working at UNIT and traveled with me for a few months after before they decided they were better off on their own. Domestics, you know.” Her voice grew fond. “They must have saved Earth a time or two, the two of them. I ought to look them up sometime, see how they got on.”

She brought her head up, met the gaze of her only passenger. She felt inexplicably sad, though she couldn’t remember why.

“Is that why we’re going there?” he asked. Her mind skittered over his name, and then she remembered. Adric, her latest companion, created by aliens and rescued from a Bubble Shock factory (of all things). He met her gaze, his face slipping into worry. “Are you all right, Doctor?”

She gave him a reassuring smile she didn’t feel. “Of course I am. It’s just...” She ran a hand through her hair, conscious of the offness of the universe and incapable of working out where it came from. “I suddenly feel as if I’ve lost my best friend.”
