The other woman was taller than the Doctor, ginger-haired and haughty, with a constant unpleasant expression that gave you the impression she thought you were a repulsive insect, fit to be squashed. “Rani,” the Doctor greeted warily.

“Doctor,” the Rani answered, eyeing the Doctor. “I must say, you’ve improved with this regeneration. Tell me, how did you adjust to changing gender?”

“What are you doing here?” she returned the Rani’s question with a question of her own.

“I would have thought you’d have worked it out by now,” the Rani responded icily. “But then, you always were a slow one.”

She thought back to when she landed on this planet, the strange reactions from most of the men she’d met. “The men. You did something to them.”

“Oh, you’re not going to get into one of those morality dilemmas, are you?” the Rani answered with a slight roll of her eyes. “Really, Doctor, we’re beyond that, don’t you think?”

“No, I don’t think,” she answered levelly. “I think a woman of your intelligence would have learned to value a little morality.”

“It’s imbecilic.” The Rani shot a scathing look at her. “Which explains why you like it, certainly. James, John,” she snapped to her latest forced labour assistants, “Keep the Doctor in place until I’m gone. If she tries to follow me, kill her.” The two men addressed planted themselves on either side of the Doctor, each taking a firm grip on her arms. Neither had a visible weapon, but knowing the Rani she didn’t doubt that they’d been provided with a way to follow her order.

The Rani operated her Stattenheim remote that brought her TARDIS to the room, but paused before entering it. She crossed the distance back towards the Doctor.

“Come back to gloat? I didn’t think that was your style.” The Doctor didn’t drop her gaze from the Rani.

“Be quiet,” the Rani told her and kissed her, holding the Doctor’s head in place so she couldn’t move away. Like most things the Rani did, the kiss was elegant and to the point.

“What was that for?” the Doctor asked when it was over.

“An experiment.” The Rani returned to her TARDIS. “Goodbye, Doctor. I have no doubt you’ll find me again. You always were interfering.”

It wasn’t until the sound of the Rani’s TARDIS dematerializing that James and John’s grips on her lessened, and the Doctor was left to shut down whatever of the Rani’s equipment was left and set to rights the remainder of the other Time Lady’s experiment.
