Time doesn’t run linearly, of course. So the first time he meets the Doctor he's actually eight years old and on a day trip to a clockwork factory.
He was so excited about it. So very excited. And so very annoyed when they got there and found that due to 'unforeseen circumstances' the factory had had to be closed for the day and everyone evacuated. They'd barely got off the transporters before they were being told to get back on them.
But he'd been looking forward to a day trip, and a day trip he was going to have.
The chaperones were busy rounding everyone up and he was such a good boy that they didn't really pay attention to him. They didn't worry that he'd disappear or run off and cause trouble, and they didn't notice when he did.
The factory was huge. He'd never seen anything like it before. The ceiling looked as big as the roof of the highest building in Boeshane. Oh wait until he told his mates about this.
"Wow," he said, looking up and grinning as his voice echoed a little in the expanse.
"You shouldn't be here."
The woman's voice came from behind him and he spun around on his heel. He'd been caught, and was probably going to be told off, and he'd probably be grounded. Damn.
"I was just looking," he said, protesting instead of apologising.
But the woman's face changed a little as she looked at him. Like she seemed surprised or like she wasn't sure of something. "Jack?" she asked.
He pulled a face. "No. Who's that?" Jack. Ew. What a stupid name.
"Just someone I knew. Really, you shouldn't be here." She smiled at him a little, even though she was telling him off, in a round about way.
"Yeah but..." he gestured to the room around them, "...look." As though that was explanation enough.
And maybe it was, because again she smiled. Like she knew.
"You're not going to tell on me, are you?" he asked, worried.
She watched him, like she was considering, and she shook her head, "Not this time. Now go on, off with you."
He beamed a smile of relief at her and watched as she pulled out a little bag.
"Jelly baby?"
He pulled another face, but still, took one.
And she smiled again, "Now I mean it, go on. And don't let me find you where you shouldn't be again." She ruffled his hair and he pulled a displeased face before reaching to nab another sweet and turning to run.
"Bye!" he called as he disappeared out the door.
"Bye Jack," she smiled. And back to that green spindle monster at hand...
