The sun beat down pleasantly when compared to the cold of her previous location. The beach was filled with humanoids and aliens alike, attired in their home world’s bathing fashions.

The Doctor flopped down on the sand next to a few sun-bathing blue-skinned Hegyls (a pleasant enough race, though she finds their taste in music abominable) and smiled brightly at her new neighbours. “Hello.” They nodded vaguely in acknowledgement, and the Doctor settled out onto her yellow towel, satisfied of her good standing with them.

She had acquiesced to changing her attire to fit in with local standards at the firm request of the caretakers of the beach. She had been a bit miffed to discover the only bathing suit she could find in the Wardrobe was a gray two-piece, but when she topped it off with a straw hat and a pair of sunglasses, she proclaimed it adequate.

She had a copy of The Time Machine to read, though she found herself instead watching an Tryptian child. He was building a sand spaceship. It resembled an arbelos, with the edges rounded off. The details weren’t particularly well done, the shape was skewed, and there were bits of stone and shell in the viewscreen.

He noticed her for the first time and beamed an almost-toothless grin. “Do you like it?”

“It’s fantastic,” she answered with a sudden grin of her own, putting her book to the side. “Can I help?”

Under his careful instruction, a lopsided port for the ship was constructed (when her new-found companion wasn’t looking, she gave it a few extra details that made it a tad more recognizable). But he was proud of it.

“I’m Jaq,” he confided in between spilling out excited directions.

“I’m the Doctor,” she said and sat back from their work. “Do you have parents?”

“My mothers are over there.” He pointed to a pair of tired women napping underneath a green umbrella. Their hair drifted in the water lapping at their heads, and one turned over to immerse her face more fully in the ocean. A gill-like extension of her lung became more visible on the woman’s neck.
Tryptians are polygamous, she remembered.

Before she could remark on his mothers, two giant gray-blue beings stomped out onto the pinkish sand, followed by the caretaker on duty. They waved energy weapons in the air- one in each hand, six in all -as the caretaker wrung appendages worriedly. Their declaration of war came out warbled and gravelly but understandable with the TARDIS translating for her.

The Doctor grabbed hold of Jaq’s arm and pulled him away from their sand construction, which was directly in the path of the hostile aliens. “Go to your mothers,” she ordered and gave him a push towards his parents.

She liberated the sonic screwdriver from its hiding place in her straw hat and turned to the aliens just in time to see them stomp directly on the sand spaceship she and Jaq built. The Doctor tightened her grip on the screwdriver and shouted to get their attention. Now, it was personal.
