“Do you know,” she said thoughtfully, “this may be one of the best pies I’ve ever had?”

All around, customers of all shapes and sizes were settled into the diner for lunch, eating sandwiches and soup and chatting amiably with each other about their days so far and what they’d watched on the telly last night and the good-looking chap in that table over there, is he looking at me? No, don’t look! The waitresses were done up in rather fifties style, smiling and saying honey and wearing just a little bit too much makeup. It was slightly overcast outside, with just enough of a part in the clouds for a bit of sun to peek through.

Luke tugged on her shirt sleeve worriedly. 'You know this isn’t real, don’t you?' )

The thing about the door was that she couldn’t remember it ever having been there before.

It certainly looked like your perfectly average door, with a knob and very definite sides and a solid feel to it, but it definitely wasn’t, and hadn’t ever been, a part of the TARDIS.

So, naturally, she opened it.

It should have been architecturally impossible to have a room literally shaped like the romanticized human idea of a heart, but somehow, the room beyond the door was. And what made it really disconcerting was the room itself was decorated with more heart-themed items than she had ever realised existed: heart-shaped tables, couches, lamps, even a hot tub and in the centre of the room-

Q, lounging in silk pajamas on a heart-shaped bed.

She glowered. “Q.”

'Ah, ah,' he said, raising a finger to his lips theatrically. 'Don’t speak, mon Docteur. Just let me look at you. Have I told you look ravishing in pink?' )

The Doctor poked her head out of the TARDIS carefully. The distress signal she’d picked up had definitely come from here, but there weren’t any obvious signs of distress. On the contrary, everyone here seemed to be having a marvelous time.

She’d landed in an elegant restaurant, surrounded by white tablecloths and flickering candlelight over engraved golden holders. As she took this in, her eye caught on one diner a few feet to her right. His face was covered by a menu, but he looked like- but it couldn’t be, not again-

He set his menu down, a smile gracing his features. “I’m so glad you could make it, Doctor, I was worried I’d have to order without you.”

A groan. “Q. What is this?”

“Don’t tell me you’d forgotten, mon Docteur,” he pouted. “I do so hate to be forgotten.”

She crossed her arms and stared him down. “I’d have to have known about this to forget it.”

Unaffected, he smiled in the face of her glare. “Didn’t you get the invitation? No matter, you’re here now. Shall we start with an appetizer or go straight to the main course?”

“I’m not hungry.”

He pouted again. “I’m going to feel slighted if you keep this up, Doctor. Why do I inspire such distrust in you?”

“It’s a knack of yours, I suppose.”

'What would it take to overcome this wall you’ve put up between us? I know!' He brightened and snapped his fingers. There was a brief flash of light- she suspected it was mainly for show- and then they had a third guest.' )

The Doctor frowned. “I beg your pardon?”

“Oh, don’t play the fool with me, Doctor.” He watched her with an air of smugness, as if he’d won something. “You must want something. I’m willing to give it to you.”

“Ah.” He was wearing the coat and scarf she’d favoured in her third regeneration; on him, it was disconcerting. “And what do you want in return?”

“Nothing much. Just your charming presence on a profitable venture.” He reclined back onto a chair that hadn’t been there a second ago and rested his legs on the console carelessly. “I’ve been watching you. You’re almost as fun as Jean-Luc and Kathy.”

'Who?' )
